The SFTR is one of the most important regulations currently facing the securities lending industry. The rules are coming in with the aim to increase transparency on the use as repos and stock loans, and on the risks around entering collateral arrangements. The final RTS standards are due to be published by ESMA, and the industry is expecting the EU Commission to approve and ratify these between now and early next year, giving institutions around a year to ensure they are prepared and ready to report under these new standards. Institutions have begun to realise the scale of the work ahead of them, and now need to establish a working plan to implement the SFTR and be prepared for reporting by the end of next year.
